Juventus defeated Atalanta 1-0 in front of a packed stadium to confirm their domination of Serie A this season.  The lone goal was scored by ex U21 Italian international Simone Padoin in the 72nd minute.

Having clinched the Scudetto, due to Romas’ surprise defeat in Catania the day before, Antonio Conte revamped his line-up, and to no one’s surprise, Juventus still came out with a win.

With a record year in Serie A this season, Juve surpassed every expectation, although their record in European competitions leaves to be desired. With a little more luck they could have gone further.

Atalanta avoided relegation and continues to mystify with their make shift line-up of “unwanted players”, they played really well and deserved better.

On a beautiful day in Sicily Roma was mobbed 4-1 by Catania.  Mariano Julio Izco scored the goals for the Sicilians in the 26th minute and the 34th minute, Gonzalo Bergessio in the 55th minute and Pablo Barrientos in 79th minute.

Francesco Totti tallied for the Romani in the 37th minute. A dark day for the Romani as this loss also automatically eliminates them from the Scudetto race. Catania is determined not to be relegated and it showed in their play.

Romas’ defensive work looked poor at times with numerous unforced errors. In spite of not reaching their objective of winning the Scudetto, Roma plays a fantastic brand of soccer with quality players at every position, and are enjoying a record-breaking season. I hope they keep all their players because it would be interesting to see how far they might go next season.

Catania is making a last stand in the race for the bottom, and it would be nice to see them back in Serie A. Based on their overall play they don’t deserve it because a lot was expected after a good season last year. Nevertheless they still have a chance.

AC Milan defeated Inter Milan 1-0 in the second derby of the season on a goal from Dutch international Nigel de Jong in the 65th minute.

Hard fought game on both sides with a number of chances to score and a draw would have been just as good. With this win AC Milan confirm their improved play under Clarence Seedorf’s guidance and get closer to Inter and Europe.

Inter in contrast are inconsistent and must regroup. They cannot lose points in the remaining 2 games if they want to reach Europe

Napoli defeated Cagliari 3-0 with goals from Dries Mertens in the 33rd minute, Goran Pandev in the 43rd minute and the Swiss international Blerim Dzemaili in the 57th minute.

Napoli was dominant from the start and could have had more goals. Cagliari had a difficult time getting out of their own half and were sloppy defensively.

But the game was meaningless for both teams. Cagliari secured their spot for next season’s Serie A campaign, and Napoli continues to add to their record breaking season with style.

So much talent on this Napoli team, it’s surprising they did not go further in the Champions or the Europa league. There is always next year. Forza Napoli

    In other scores

Fiorentina was defeated at home 4-3 by Sassuolo, Lazio and Hellas Verona played to 3-3 draw, Torino defeated Chievo Verona 1-0 to further their chances for Europe, Parma defeated Sampadoria 2-0, Udinese defeated Livorno 5-3 in a quasi Ping Pong match and Genoa and Bologna played to a scoreless draw 0-0

Although the race to the bottom is heated with 5 teams still in danger, the Europa league spot is also up for grabs and the possibilities are numerous, needless to say it will be an exciting and interesting conclusion to the season. Stay tuned

In Coppa Italia action Napoli defeated Fiorentina 3-1 in a fantastic final that saw Lorenzo Insigne score 2 goals. Napoli have won every final they have been in (5), a great achievement for the Partenopei that confirms their great play and a record-breaking season.
